`Soothsayer' arrested for fraud

CHENNAI:
Red Hills police on Tuesday arrested a 56-year-old woman, on charges of claiming to be a soothsayer and cheating people of Rs. 6 lakh.
Police said the woman, Mahalakshmi of Mondiamman Street, Red Hills, befriended Mahalakshmi of Tambaram. Claiming to be a `soothsayer', she told the latter that she would have a windfall.
Taken in by the woman, the victim introduced some of her relatives and friends to the accused, who collected money from them too.
The arrested woman was indulging in this kind of activities for the past one year, police noted. Cases under Section 420 (cheating) and 417 (punishment for cheating) have been filed against her and she has been remanded to police custody, they added.
