CHENNAI:
The Tamil Nadu police have an adequate mechanism to screen refugees arriving from Sri Lanka, Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee said on Thursday.
Those belonging to militant groups or trained by any militant group were identified and lodged in a special camp. At present, 24 Sri Lankan Tamils were lodged in the Special Camp at Chengalpattu.
Of them, six were LTTE dropouts/agents, three were other militants (TEA-1, TELO-1, EPRLF-1), 11 were smugglers and four were involved in criminal cases.
The local police and intelligence agencies were monitoring the activities of refugees.
Those refugees whose antecedents were in doubt, were lodged in the quarantine camp at Mandapam for a maximum period of one month.
They were subjected to thorough interrogation and screening by the "Q" branch CID and other intelligence agencies before being transferred to the open camp. As on date, 98 refugees were still in the quarantine camp..
Since January 12 this year, 3,673 refugees belonging to 1,155 families had arrived at the Mandapam Refugee Settlement, the DGP said in a release.
