NAGAPATTINAM: Tamil Nadu is poised for a rapid economic growth fuelled by the excellent Centre-State relationship, says Union Minister of State for Law and Justice K. Venkatapathy. He was addressing the fourth-day function of the five-day Info-Expo public information campaign being conducted by the Press Information Bureau at Thirukkuvalai in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday. Mr. Venkatapathy said after implementation of the Sethusamudhram project, the Tuticorin port would become a major commercial centre. Minister for Fisheries K.P.P. Sami said the DMK Government had taken up a Rs.1,000-crore housing and infrastructure projects for fishermen affected by tsunami. The Ministers distributed loans and welfare assistance to many beneficiaries.
National institute
On Tuesday, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jegadeesan said the Centre was setting up a Rs.60-crore national institute for multiple disability at Muttukadu near Chennai. The five-year project had already been allocated Rs.22 crore. The institute, the first of its kind in Asia, would have a research and training wing offering six-month, one-year and two-year courses for dealing with multiple disability. Ms. Jegadeesan said a new policy would be announced in the next session of Parliament to provide concessions for senior citizens. It would address the problems of the aging population in a comprehensive manner.
High-tech textile parks
Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan, who also addressed the function on Tuesday, said the Centre was setting up high tech textile parks at a cost of Rs. 240 crore and a subsidy component of Rs.43 crore. Subsidy would also be provided to the handloom sector for infrastructure development of cluster units put up by 50 to 60 weavers. Mr. Elangovan pointed out that several schemes for the textile sector and handloom weavers announced by the Centre were not availed by the AIADMK regime. The Government was keen to protect farmers and develop villages quickly. Nagapattinam MP A.K.S.Vijayan spoke.
