Army evacuates 2000 people in Ladakh
Staff Reporter
Jammu
: As part of a massive effort to mitigate the sufferings of villagers in the wake of torrential rain in Ladakh, Army personnel are carrying food, water and medical supplies for them and rendering help in retrieving valuables and restoring communications. They have so far reached 3500 people in remote villages. Officials said 17 people have lost their lives in the State in floods.
A spokesman of the Northern Command told The Hindu that some 2000 people have been shifted to tents pitched by the Army in the Leh belt. Efforts were on to evacuate tourists, including foreigners, marooned in Zanskar Valley. A group of four Americans, part of a trekking group, was rescued on Wednesday.
