HYDERABAD: A Central team would soon visit Andhra Pradesh to study the flood damages in the State, according to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. He was addressing a press conference here on Wednesday in the presence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. A detailed memorandum would be submitted to the Centre after assessing the damages. Only an interim memorandum was submitted now. It did not have the final figures of the damages as the exercise was still on. The floodwater has not yet receded in several districts. The Government had data pertaining to only three districts. "I have requested the Centre to help the State in a big way, the floods being among the worst in 53 years."
Bunding of villages
He sought Centre's assistance for the completion of bunding of villages and towns on the banks of Godavari River. "This will ensure that the tragedy will not repeat." Though the work was initiated after 1986 floods in Godavari, it could be completed to an extent of 80 km of the total 480 km stretch. The Government would accord top priority and try to complete it in a year's time. Meanwhile, APCC president K. Keshav Rao charged TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu with performing a "tamasha" and making an issue of not allowing him to meet Ms. Gandhi at Amalapuram.
