HYDERABAD: The Government on Wednesday prohibited plying of school, tourist and factory buses, which are more than 15 years old in the city with immediate affect. The Transport Department is to conduct a special drive from Thursday to crack down on such vehicles. Joint Transport Commissioner C.L.N. Gandhi said all buses more than 15 years old would be seized if anyone was found to be using them. The ban orders have been issued to control vehicular pollution following High Court orders, he said. There are about 1,177 buses plying in the twin cities with a running span crossing 15 years. With this decision, these vehicles will not be considered for issuance of any permit or fitness certificates, according to Mr. Gandhi. Autos are next on the radar of the department with the JTC clearly stating that a ban on plying of three-wheelers that are more than 15 years was in the offing. However, the department has decided to spare two-wheelers as of now. Mr. Gandhi said that 26,185 goods vehicles and 381 stage carriages have already been prohibited in the city last year.
