An unusual Independence Day celebration

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: In pursuit of his single-minded obsession of entering the Guinness Book of World Records, hair expert Amjad Habib on Monday began a 24-hour free hair colouring exercise at South Extension Part-II here.

Before beginning the exercise, Habib -- who studied at London's Morris School of Cosmetology and London College of Fashion -- said: "It gives me immense pleasure to celebrate Independence Day in the way I know best. The endeavour is to celebrate and educate the people about the latest hair colouring techniques, re-bonding and hair straightening methods. I thank the people for providing me adequate support."

Stating that the colour applied on a person's hair would depend on his or her personality and complexion, Habib said: "It is all about angles, the contours of the face and a few other elements like lifestyle. A good hairdresser should have the ability to interpret and capture the trend and then to find the right way to portray it in a contemporary and creative way."

Habib -- who has been a dominant force in taking the art of hair styling to the discerning masses through his shows -- has worked backstage for major fashion events including Femina Miss India-2003, Sunsilk Bridal Asia-2002 and Lakme India Fashion Week-2001 and 2002.

Habib's forte is fusion of modern and conservative hair styling with a smart use of colours. After undergoing training in Britain, Amjad worked at his father's salon.

With the evolution of modern society, the concept of hair styling and beauty treatments has undergone a sea change. The growth has been fuelled further by the arrival of highly skilled hair stylists.

Boasting an enviable list of patrons and endorsements from internationally acclaimed hair cosmetics groups, Habibs -- the brand name -- has transformed hair dressing into a fashion statement.
