NEW DELHI: Showing scant regard for the National Flag, not one Councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi turned up for the Independence Day celebrations here at Town Hall on Monday as Mayor Farhad Suri unfurled the Tricolour. Being very close to the Red Fort from where the Prime Minister addresses the nation on the morning of August 15, Independence Day is celebrated a day in advance at Town Hall for security concerns. All Councillors and senior officials are invited to attend the flag-hoisting ceremony. However, this year not one of the 134 Councillors, except for the Mayor, was present at the function, while Municipal Commissioner who is not in Delhi, also could not attend the programme. Even the office-bearers of the Deliberative Wing were absent. . Similarly, all BJP councillors, including Leader of Opposition Subhash Arya and Leader of Opposition in Standing Committee Vijender Gupta, also failed to attend the ceremony.
