Corrections and clarifications

  • Referring to the report "Supreme Court stays ordinance on appointment of archakas in temples" (Chennai city, August 15, 2006, page 1), a reader wondered whether the correspondent was right in referring to Agama sastras, custom and usage as being a "three-decade-old practice". Our Legal Correspondent clarifies: "The reference to the three-decade-old practice is to a practice being followed after the Supreme Court's judgment in Seshammal's case in the 1970s. There is a reference to this case in the report which says: `The petitioners contended that the ordinance purporting to be a step towards social reform had the effect of reversing the settled law declared by the Supreme Court in Seshammal's case.' The petitioners' contention was that an attempt was made in the 1970s to bring a similar law and that was rejected by the apex court. The three-decade-old practice pertained to the one being followed after this judgment."
