HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India has sought to focus attention on the need to protect the rights of Girijans and tackle issues concerning hill tribes, with particular reference to the draft bill that is being prepared now. At a dharna before Indira Park here on Tuesday, CPI State secretary K. Narayana addressed a gathering predominantly comprising women and expressed concern over the problems faced by Girijans. Among issues that needed to be tackled without loss of time were those pertaining to displacement due to the proposed bauxite plant in agency area of Visakhapatnam district and the uranium plant coming up in Nalgonda, he said.
Support prices
The CPI leader also dwelt on the way the Girijans were deprived of support prices for their farm produce. He recalled that by the time the produce including fresh vegetables, fruits and foodgrains were brought down to the plains, half of the price went for transport costs, even as middlemen robbed the poor Girijans of what was rightfully due to them. Among other demands were strengthening ways and means of ensuring that tribals' land was protected and creation of basic infrastructure for health and education and providing safe drinking water. Prominent among others present were party MLAs Demudu (Chintapalli) and R. Ravinder Kumar Naik (Devarakonda).
