MLAS' PROTEST: TRS legislators staging dharna on the pavement in front of the DGP's office in Hyderabad on Tuesday. PHOTO: P.V. Sivakumar
HYDERABAD: For the second consecutive day on Tuesday, members of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) stalled the question hour and demonstrated near the Speaker's podium leading to their suspension from the Assembly once again. All 15 members present were suspended by Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy who rejected their demand for adopting a House resolution on creation of Telangana. In a repeat of the incidents of the past several days, placard-waging TRS members rushed to the podium as soon as the Speaker announced that he had disallowed seven adjournment notices tabled on different issues, including the one on Telangana. Telugu Desam members stalled the proceedings for a while seeking a discussion on the adjournment notice on the Government's `failure' to protect State interests before the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal.
At DGP's office
TRS MLAs staged dharna in front of the main gate of the office of the Director General of Police immediately after their suspension from the Assembly. The MLAs led by former Minister Nayani Narsimha Reddy sought prior appointment with the DGP. On being informed that DGP Swaranjit Sen was not available, they decided to meet DGP (law and order) P.V. Naidu and submit a memorandum. Mr. Naidu reportedly agreed to accept their memorandum and invited them to come to the office. However, they were greeted by a large posse of police personnel, who prevented their entry into the DGP's office.
`Humiliation'
Taking serious exception at this, the MLAs termed it as a `humiliation' of the Telangana people and demanded an unconditional apology from the police officers. They squatted in front of the main gate for more than an hour.
Communication gap
Mr. Naidu then spoke to T. Harish Rao on phone and explained that the MLAs were stopped due to a communication gap. The MLAs were invited to come and present a memorandum. In their memorandum, the MLAs alleged that the police in Telangana districts were forcing TRS activists to come to the police station and provide personal details about themselves. Stating that no such instructions had been issued, Mr. Naidu promised to look into the issue.
