dated September 1, 1956: Eight pages in 5 minutes

Mr. M.C. Shah, Minister for Revenue and Civil Expenditure, assured the Lok Sabha on August 30 that he could read a statement of eight pages in five minutes and finished it within the period. The Minister was about to make a statement on the nationalised Life Insurance Corporation when members suggested that if it was too long the Minister might lay it on the table of the House instead of reading it. The Speaker then asked how long the statement was. Mr. Shah promptly replied: "Eight small pages and it will take five minutes to read." Asked how an eight-page statement could be read in five minutes, the Minister assured the Speaker, "I had a rehearsal this morning." Ultimately, Mr. Shah read the statement within five minutes.
