Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav on Wednesday called upon the officials dealing with matters relating to disabled persons under the Women and Child Welfare Department to respond to the needs of the disabled persons within the prescribed timeframe. He was presiding over a meeting of the Disabled Adalat here, according to a press release. After hearing the petitions regarding various problems of over 40 disabled persons, Mr. Yadav said the situation would not have come to a sorry pass if the difficulties were to have attended by the officials in time. Mr. Yadav instructed the Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department to look into a particular complaint from a resident of Kambibane, whose ward was refused the help of an assistant for writing the SSLC examination. He asked the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation depot manager to divert bus passes concerning 36 disabled persons to the needy for they had not renewed bus passes. As many as 150 persons had availed themselves of the benefits so far. The officials of the department should identify physically handicapped students in schools and provide them with government facilities. Disabled persons could avail themselves of ration cards by giving applications at the respective taluk offices. At the same time, disabled sportspersons who had excelled in sports and games activities at the State, national and international level competitions too should be considered for the rewards as per government norms. Officials should apprise the disabled persons of the various government schemes, Mr. Yadav said. President of the State Council of the Physically Handicapped D.K. Suresh Kumar said the proposed amendment to the Disabled Persons Act, which would come into being soon, would provide additional benefits to handicapped persons. Various issues such as salary to the disabled persons, bus pass and scholarships were proposed at the meeting by the Raksha Disabled Children Parents Association and members of other disabled persons associations. Those present at the meeting included District Surgeon V.D. Palekar, Somwarpet tahsildar Anil Vas Manuel, Officer of the Disabled Department Madappa and Saira Bano from the Department of the Women and Child Welfare.
