COIMBATORE: A 48-year-old man has been spared a surgical scar in the neck with surgeons removing an infected salivary gland through a keyhole incision in the mouth. Director of Minimal Access Surgery John AC Thanakumar and ENT surgeon Sara Thomas of the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) accessed the infected submandibular salivary gland through the incision between the tongue and the right jawbone.
Acute pain
The patient, a milkman, suffered a swollen jaw and the pain was acute as stones and pus had formed in the gland. He was discharged in two days and he could resume his normal work.
Conventional method
The conventional treatment involved a two-inch incision in the neck to remove the infected gland. (There are totally three salivary glands.)
Technique
KMCH chairman Nalla G. Palanisami said the minimal access surgery technique was being used for thyroid and parathyroid. This ensured patients returning to work early.
