NGO goes all out to help flood-hit

GUNTUR: A non-governmental organisation based at Chilakaluripet, ASSIST, in Guntur district helped 1,000 flood-affected families in Aswaraopet mandal of Khammam district.

In the first week of August and last week of July thousands of people in Aswaraopet mandal remained cut off from rest of the world for several days, but during that time ASSIST reached 13 villages and distributed 10 kg of rice, 2 kg of redgram, half a kg of tamarind and half a kg of edible oil per family.

The project was supported by Sonnenhaus of Germany. The ASSIST also helped Scheduled Tribe communities in Vararamachandrapuram, Polavaram and Kunavaram mandals under a separate programme supported by DESWOS, another NGO from Germany.

Operational Director Jasti Ranga Rao, secretary Ravi Vadlamani, associate directors Vianney, BP Singh, Murali Krishna and coordinator Ravibabu along with volunteers from `Melukolupu' participated in the programmes.The ASSIST team took motorboats where they could not reach by road.
