VIJAYAWADA: To effectively cater to the needs of growing number of vehicle-owners in the city, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has constructed an additional building on its premises on M.G. Road at a cost of Rs. 63.5 lakhs. It houses all facilities to offer transactions involving direct contact with the public, while general administration will continue functioning in the existing building. The new single-storeyed building has been completed and is due for inauguration by Transport and Cooperation Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana at 2 p.m. on Friday. Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao, Minister for Higher Education Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao and others will be present.
More office space
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Deputy Transport Commissioner M. Ratna Manikyam said that the new facility had created an additional office space of 6,242 sq. ft in ground and first floors. It was developed with totally Government funds and public-related transactions would be offered in the new building. Transport, non-transport, driving licence and photo studio facilities would be shifted to this building. The DTC's office would continue to be in the existing building.
Foundation stone
Ms. Manikyam said that Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation was involved in the construction of the building and it would be handed over the task of constructing a building for the RTA office at Machilipatnam also. After inaugurating the building at RTA office in the city, Mr. Lakshminarayana would proceed to Nuzvid to lay the foundation stone for a new building to house RTA unit office there. The RTA was operating in rented accommodation. The Government had given three acres on Vissannapet Road for RTA office. Driving track would be developed on the same site, for which the Government had released Rs. 15 lakhs. The Rural Water Supply (RWS) would construct the building. On imposition of green tax on over-aged vehicles, Ms. Manikyam said that they were yet to receive orders from the Government about collection of tax from different categories of vehicles. The tax would be collected from owners of all transport vehicles aged above seven years and from owners of non-transport vehicles aged above 15 years. There were 24,401 over-aged transport vehicles in the district as against 1.28 lakh non-transport vehicles.
