CHENNAI:
The Lalitha Kala Vedika, as part of its 11th anniversary celebrations, presented gold medals to Carnatic vocalist Maharajapuram S. Ramachandran and Bharatanatyam exponent Indira Rajan, and a cash award of Rs. 10,000 to mridangist Guruvayur Durai. While Ms. Rajan received the Lalitha Kala Vedika gold medal from former Madras High Court judge K.S. Bakthavatsalam on Thursday, the other two artists received the honour on Wednesday.
Addressing the function, Mr. Bakthavatsalam said Ms. Rajan over the decades had distinguished herself both as a dancer and teacher. Narada Gana Sabha secretary R. Krishnaswamy said she was a purist and maintained the age-old dance traditions.
