CHENNAI: The State Government introduced three Bills, including one to provide for regulation of admission and determination of fee in professional educational institutions, in the Assembly on Thursday. The Tamil Nadu Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Bill, 2006 introduced by Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi said the Government decided to bring forward a comprehensive legislation following the assurance given in the Governor's address on May 24 that the confusion in the admission to professional courses would be cleared and the procedure streamlined. The Government also proposed to constitute a committee for overseeing admission and fee regulation. "As the committee proposed to be constituted is for the admission of students from the academic year 2007-2008, necessary proposals may be obtained from the Heads of Departments concerned and provision made in Budget Estimate," it said.
Sales Tax Bill
Minister for Commercial Taxes S.N.M. Ubayadullah introduced the Tamil Nadu Sales Tax (Settlement of Arrears) Bill, 2006. It is aimed at settling arrears of tax and penalty of interest pertaining to Sales Tax. As substantial amount of Sales Tax, penalty or interest was due to the Government and there were long-pending cases, the Government decided to introduce a new trader-friendly Samadhan Scheme for collection of tax arrears by introducing a legislation, as announced on the floor of the Assembly on July 22, the Bill pointed out. Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu introduced the Tamil Nadu Educational Development Day (Declaration and Celebration) Bill, 2006 that provides for declaring the birth anniversary of K. Kamaraj on July 15, as Educational Development Day. The Government had taken the decision following representations from various quarters.
