Income Tax raids on jewellers

CHENNAI: The Income Tax (Investigation Wing) seized cash of Rs. 13.5 lakh and gold jewellery of 5.76 kg valued at Rs. 50 lakh following raids on the premises of leading jewellers in Vellore.

According to an official release, 50 officers and staff were engaged in the raids on jewellers who were engaged in the business of pawn-broking and money lending. The searches were conducted on three premises and survey operations on five premises. Searches have so far revealed undisclosed cash and jewellery, investment outside the books of accounts in money lending and pawn-broking, suppression of interest income received from money lending and investment from unaccounted sources in huge stocks of gold and silver. — Special Correspondent

MP sanctions Rs. 20 lakh for dredging

CUDDALORE: Chidambaram MP E. Ponnuswami has allocated Rs. 20 lakh from his MP Local Area Development Funds for dredging a stretch of sea at Chinnur Pudupettai.

In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Ponnuswami said during tsunami the shallow waters to a stretch of 1.5 km from the Light House was silted posing problems to fishermen.

They would have to leave their boats far away from the shore and wade through water to reach the boats to go for fishing.

This hampered their movement and hence, they had made an appeal to the MP to take steps to deepen the stretch. To alleviate their suffering, he sanctioned the money for dredging the stretch. — Special Correspondent

Holiday for Onam welcomed

CHENNAI: The Confederation of Tamil Nadu Malayalee Associations welcomed the Government's decision to declare holiday for Onam in Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore.

"We would like to thank you very much for the kind gesture towards the non-resident Keralite population in the State. This special Onam gift from you will certainly gladden the hearts of Malayalees in the State," the association said.

The association appealed to the Government to declare a holiday all over Tamil Nadu for the festival since there were a large number of Keralites living in other districts, especially in all urban centres, including Chennai. — Special Correspondent

49 injured as bus overturns

PUDUKOTTAI: Fortynine passengers were injured when a State transport corporation bus overturned at Valavampatti near Adanakottai in the district on Thursday.

While 47 passengers were admitted to the Government Hospital here, two were taken to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. According to police sources, the accident occurred when the Thanjavur-bound bus collided with another government bus.

The driver lost control of the bus and it overturned causing injuries to the passengers. — Staff Reporter

Tusk seized, two arrested

ERODE: Forest personnel seized a big tusk from two persons and are on the look out for two others.

On a tip off, the Sathyamangalam District Forest Officer Ramasubramaniam deputed the Special Squad Ranger Nedunchezhian on Tuesday to conduct a raid in the Kemmanaickken Palayam area. On noticing the forest officials, the four persons hiding in a bush tried to escape.

But the officials arrested two of them after a chase and recovered a big tusk. They were remanded. — Staff Reporter

Students take ill

PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 37 students of Panchayat union elementary school at Kaatunaaval near Kandarvakottai took ill after taking noon-meal on Thursday. They were treated at the Government Hospital as outpatients.

The students developed nausea due to suspected food poisoning, police said.

`Mahasamprokshanam' performed

NAGAPATTINAM: Thousands witnessed the `Mahasamprokshanam' of Sri Pundarikavalli samedha Sri Govindarajaswamy Temple at Therazhundur near Mayiladuturai in Nagapattinam district on Thursday.

The rituals were performed by priests led by K. Srinivasa Bhattachariar of Sri Amaruviappan Temple of Therazhundur. K.E.B. Rangarajan, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Kumbakonam, coordinator of the celebrations, and a large number of dignitaries participated in the event. Minister disburses loans to SHGs

PERAMBALUR: Union Minister for Environment and Forests A. Raja gave away loans to the tune of Rs. 5.87 crore to 1,131 members of self-help groups in the district at a function held at Jayamkondam recently.

He said that the Government was taking steps for the implementation of the Jayamkondam Lignite Power Project by taking advantage of the lignite deposits in and around Jayamkondam.

The Chief Regional Managers, Indian Overseas Bank, Thanjavur and Tiruchi, R. Vaidyanathan and R. Chandran were among those who spoke. Mr. Raja later gave away loans to the tune of Rs. 43.55 lakh sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation to 271 people.

Notebooks distributed

PUDUKOTTAI: Under the auspices of the Thirupalani Thaipoosam Annadana Sangam, Calicut, free notebooks were distributed to about 200 students of the Municipal Middle School, Machuvadi, Pudukottai town under the `Educational aid' programme. President of the Pudukottai Ilakkiya Peravai M. Muthu Srinivasan presided over the function. R. Rajendran, Assistant Elementary Educational Officer and A. Thambidurai, Additional Elementary Educational Officer, distributed the notebooks.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: Water level at the Mettur dam stood at 115.00 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 9,633 cusecs and the outflow 20,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

TV sets arrive

ERODE: All households at Samathuvapurams will be given TV sets on September 15, the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said on Thursday. Samathuvapurams are at Kumilanparappu, Maichalpalayam, Ayyalure and Uthiyur. In every Samathuvapuram, there are 100 houses. Ten houses are vacant. One hundred TV sets each were dispatched to Gobichettipalayam, Anthiyur, Kangeyam and Erode panchayat unions for distribution.

Five-year RI for murder

ERODE: The Bhavani Fast Track Court judge, Thiagarajan, awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a man for killing his son-in-law. The prosecution case was that Krishnan, stabbed Venkatachalam (45) to death on December 26, 2005. Some years ago, Venkatachalam got married for a second time. Later, he left his second wife and apologised to Krishnan, father of first wife Palaniammal. However, Venkatachalam, inebriated, picked up a quarrel with Krishnan and tried to stab him with a knife. Krishnan seized the knife and stabbed Venkatachalam.

Electoral rolls published

ERODE: Electoral rolls of Erode district were published today. The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said that the rolls were released first in Suriampalayam panchayat and later in Periya Agraharam Panchayat.

Local body officials said that the rolls would be kept at Panchayat Union Offices, Municipal Offices for the time being. Then be made available in all 343 village panchayats, 59 town panchayats, 20 panchayat unions and nine municipal offices. If voters' names were not included in the list, they might apply in Form 6. New voters could also apply for getting their names listed.

Control room

ERODE: A Natural Calamity Control Room will start functioning in the Collectorate from October 1. The public can get information round-the-clock by dialling 1077 (non-metered), said the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan on Wednesday.

Couple end life

TIRUNELVELI : A couple from here reportedly committed suicide on Thursday.

The police said M. Gomathi (24) of Shenbagam Pillai West Street, who was married to T. Muthukumar (30), an autorickshaw driver of the same area in June, had an argument with her husband.

She hanged herself in her house, when Muthukumar was out. On seeing the wife's body, Muthukumar consumed poison. He died on the way to hospital.

Man killed

Nagercoil : One person was killed on the spot and two others sustained injuries in a road accident on Thursday.

According to the police, Vinu (20) and his friend Satheeskumar (21) of Unnamalakadai near Marthandam were going to Marthandam in an autorikshaw, when a lorry coming from the opposite direction dashed against vehicle by killing Vinu.

Satheeskumar and the auto driver Kingsely were admitted to the Government Hospital.

Ration rice seized

TIRUNELVELI : A special police team manning the check-post at Kaavalkinaru Junction on the Tirunelveli - Nagercoil National Highway seized 211 bags of ration rice being smuggled to Kerala on Thursday.

The police said that the driver parked the vehicle on the roadside and escaped on seeing the police team, led by Sub-Inspector of Police, Koodankulam, Jayanthi.

Woman assaulted

Tuticorin : The police are on the lookout for T. Devaraj and M. Narayanan, who allegedly assaulted a 33-year-old woman at Eral on Wednesday.

The police said the accused assaulted the woman in an intoxicated mood, while she was returning from a temple at Sirthondanallur. — Staff Reporter
