Income Tax raids on jewellers
According to an official release, 50 officers and staff were engaged in the raids on jewellers who were engaged in the business of pawn-broking and money lending. The searches were conducted on three premises and survey operations on five premises. Searches have so far revealed undisclosed cash and jewellery, investment outside the books of accounts in money lending and pawn-broking, suppression of interest income received from money lending and investment from unaccounted sources in huge stocks of gold and silver. MP sanctions Rs. 20 lakh for dredging
In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Ponnuswami said during tsunami the shallow waters to a stretch of 1.5 km from the Light House was silted posing problems to fishermen. They would have to leave their boats far away from the shore and wade through water to reach the boats to go for fishing. 49 injured as bus overturns
While 47 passengers were admitted to the Government Hospital here, two were taken to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. According to police sources, the accident occurred when the Thanjavur-bound bus collided with another government bus. Tusk seized, two arrested
On a tip off, the Sathyamangalam District Forest Officer Ramasubramaniam deputed the Special Squad Ranger Nedunchezhian on Tuesday to conduct a raid in the Kemmanaickken Palayam area. On noticing the forest officials, the four persons hiding in a bush tried to escape. But the officials arrested two of them after a chase and recovered a big tusk. They were remanded. Staff Reporter

Local body officials said that the rolls would be kept at Panchayat Union Offices, Municipal Offices for the time being. Then be made available in all 343 village panchayats, 59 town panchayats, 20 panchayat unions and nine municipal offices. If voters' names were not included in the list, they might apply in Form 6. The police said M. Gomathi (24) of Shenbagam Pillai West Street, who was married to T. Muthukumar (30), an autorickshaw driver of the same area in June, had an argument with her husband. She hanged herself in her house, when Muthukumar was out. On seeing the wife's body, Muthukumar consumed poison. He died on the way to hospital.
Man killed
According to the police, Vinu (20) and his friend Satheeskumar (21) of Unnamalakadai near Marthandam were going to Marthandam in an autorikshaw, when a lorry coming from the opposite direction dashed against vehicle by killing Vinu. Satheeskumar and the auto driver Kingsely were admitted to the Government Hospital.

The police said that the driver parked the vehicle on the roadside and escaped on seeing the police team, led by Sub-Inspector of Police, Koodankulam, Jayanthi.
Woman assaulted
The police said the accused assaulted the woman in an intoxicated mood, while she was returning from a temple at Sirthondanallur. Staff Reporter
