CHENNAI: "I want to conquer the skies ... I am proud to tell people that I have opted for a career in flying" was how Dwitij K. Reddy described his passion for flying. He is still waiting in the wings: he is one of the five student flying trainees eagerly awaiting to complete 8 hours of flying of the mandatory 200 hours to secure a Commercial Pilot Licence.

The "wings ceremony" will be held by the Madras Flying Club (MFC) here shortly.

If Reddy was preparing to conquer the Indian skies at the earliest, Bimi Antony dreamed of taking to the skies from the age of 4: "I am not the only sibling in my family and I was yearning to take to flying as a career as she could have a bird's eye view from the cockpit."

"There is a big jump in women taking to flying as a career. It is heartening to note that this profession is no longer male-dominated since there has been a 30 per cent increase in women opting for the profession," said R. Nand Kumar, who is the Secretary of the MFC and a senior Airbus pilot of Indian (formerly Indian Airlines). The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has projected a requirement of over 4,500 pilots by 2010.

Exuding confidence and expressing similar optimism, three other student trainees of the MFC — Sanju Ramadas, P.G. Avinash and Z. Sarfaraz — said they too were waiting for their "wings."
