Air-India to operate additional services

Thiruvananthapuram: Air-India will operate seven additional flights using B 737-800 aircraft of Air India Express to clear the heavy rush of passengers from the capital to Dubai. Air India Chairman and Managing Director V. Thulasidas said here that the additional flights would be operated on September 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 11. The aircraft can accommodate 185 persons. Additional flights would be operated from Nedumbassery and Kozhikode to Dubai and other destinations in the United Arab Emirates. — Staff Reporter

Convene bankers' meet: Chennithala

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala has urged the Government to convene a meeting of bank chairpersons to discuss the delay in sanctioning loans for economically backward students. In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Chennithala said that the Union Finance Minister had repeatedly pointed out that the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India had issued guidelines on education loans. However, the banks were guilty of delay in sanctioning loan amounts on time. — Special Correspondent

Milk brands banned

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has banned the sale of 12 brands of milk in the State for 15 days following the detection of adulteration during a quality inspection carried out at various places. The brands include Sree Balaji, Vagamon, Haritha, Joys Milk, Hyma, Maruthi, Society Milk, Palma, Kamadhenu, Amrutham, Gold and Madhurima. — Special Correspondent

Lucky VAT favours welding worker

Thiruvananthapuram: T. Nagaraj, a welding worker hailing from Menankulam, Kazhakuttam, has become the first winner of the Lucky VAT card scheme introduced by the Government. He won the prize of Rs.1 lakh on a purchase of Rs.1,050 from a shop selling pipes in the Chalai market. The scratch-and-win coupon he got along with the bill proved to be lucky for him. "I could not believe the shop hand when he scratched the card for me and announced the prize. In my present situation, it is a blessing for me," says Nagaraj, whose family resides in a hut on an 11- cent plot. — Special Correspondent

Food festival

KOLLAM: The Yatri Nivas here is organising an Onam food festival from September 2 to 6. The festival will be inaugurated by Chairman of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Cheriyan Philip. The festival will be on from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Thiruvonam day (September 5), Onasadya has been arranged.

Kollam: The 106th birth anniversary of the former Kollam Bishop Jerome M. Fernandez will be observed here on September 8. The rituals and function in this connection will be held at Tangasseri Infant Jesus Cathedral Church. Bishop Jerome was laid to rest at the cathedral. — Staff Reporter

Hooch seized

ALAPPUZHA: More than 10,000 litres of hooch was seized last week in raids held across the district. As many as 217 raids were conducted and 19 cases registered. Alappuzha Assistant Excise Commissioner N.J. Mathai said that 16 persons were held in this connection. He said raids would continue . — Staff Reporter
