Councillors unhappy over quality of water

TAMBARAM : Councillors expressed unhappiness over the quality of water supplied by the Tambaram municipality in their respective wards, at the council meeting held in Tambaram on Wednesday.

S. Indiran (DMK), complained to the Chairman that residents in East Tambaram got water only once in 10 or 12 days.

He asked the municipality to increase the supply. Councillor Veerasingham also complained about the quality of water and asked the Chairman to improve the situation.

In his reply, the Municipal Chairman (In-charge), A. Janakiraman said the municipality would do a quality test of water at source point as well as at the receiving points through the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, which is supplying water from Palar River basin.

He told the council that a mega project has been planned to undertake water supply improvement works exclusively for Tambaram Municipality.

The project cost was put at Rs. 30 crore by M.K. Stalin, Minister for Municipal Administration in the Assembly, Mr. Janakiraman added.

The councillors had prepared a charter of requirements of civic amenities for improving services in the municipal area as requested under TNUDP -III scheme. The council also gave its formal assent to hand over the Bharatha Matha Street in East Tambaram to the State Highways Department. The members felt that heavy vehicle traffic damaged the road and the expenses for maintaining this 1365 m road were too much for the Municipality.

Hence the decision to hand it over to the Highways Department.

Power supply

The issues of frequent power cuts and voltage fluctuations in West Tambaram areas were discussed in the council.

It has been proposed to hand over 50 cents of land in Pudhu Thangal area to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for building a substation, which would help them to improve the power supply. Government sanction may be sought, the council was told.
