CHENNAI: Public Works Minister Durai Murugan, who resumed his duty 10 days ago after undergoing a bypass surgery last month, turned emotional on Thursday in the Assembly, recounting how indebted he was to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Recalling the circumstances under which he was introduced to Mr. Karunanidhi 46 years ago, Mr. Durai Murugan said it was because of Mr. Karunanidhi that he became Minister thrice and was fielded from the same constituency (Katpadi) eight times. "All the name and fame that I have received are given by my leader," he said, his voice choking.

Watched by his family members from the visitors' gallery, the Minister said he was overwhelmed when he came to know how concerned Mr. Karunanidhi was about his health. "Doctors have removed a block from my heart. But, nobody can remove the `block of gratitude' to Kalaignar (Mr. Karunanidhi) from my heart," he said, after making introductory remarks to his reply on the debate on the demands for grants to the Public Works Department.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy suggested that Mr. Durai Murugan conclude his speech as copies of the text of announcements to be made by him had been distributed to members. Speaker R. Avudaiappan ruled that the announcements were taken as read.
