CHENNAI:
The Tamizhaga Cable TV Urimaiyalar Sangam, an association of cable TV operators in the state, has welcomed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) orders on Thursday fixing the maximum price for pay channels at Rs. 5 each per month per subscriber in all cities that have conditional access system (CAS) in effect.
The association's state general secretary Kayal R.S. Elavarasu said the attractive pricing was sure to attract consumers to purchase set top boxes. He however added that the TRAI orders on fixing the monthly tariff for the basic tier of free-to-air channels at Rs.77 a month needed revision.
"Currently the price for basic tier is Rs.72 per month and the cable operators in Chennai (the only city where CAS is in effect) find it difficult to maintain their services."
The TRAI tariffs are expected to come into effect by December 31, before which CAS would have rolled out in the other Metros. The orders also make it mandatory for multi-system operators and cable operators to offer set top boxes on rental basis.
There is no official communication yet from the channels, MSOs or Direct to Home operators on the TRAI order yet.
A clearer picture on the changes and the end benefits for the users is expected to emerge in the next few days.
