Shift system for government colleges

Staff Reporter

Rs. 3 crore for building renovation

CHENNAI : Shift system in Government colleges will enable more students to join colleges of their choice, said K. Ponmudi, Minister for Higher Education, here on Thursday.

He was speaking at the inaugural of classes under shift system in Presidency College. He said the system of having two shifts in the day was mainly targeted at young people who wanted to continue studies but were denied seat.

The Minister said that around 1070 teachers in government colleges and 600 in aided colleges would be recruited to meet the additional need for teachers that the shift system would entail. The Government has abolished all self-financing courses in its colleges. All students would pay the same fees and private colleges would not be able to charge higher fees, citing the government colleges as a precedent, Mr. Ponmudi said.

Amidst cheers from students and teachers, he announced that Rs. 3 crore had been sanctioned to renovate the buildings of the 166-year-old Presidency College. Several of its buildings are old and in a state of disrepair, he said, adding that work would begin and efforts would be made to restore the college to its past glory.

K. Ganesan, Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Department of Higher Education, said the shift system would initially be implemented in 10 government colleges in the State.

Since it is not possible for the Government to set up new colleges, other ways to increase the number of seats have to be found. The scheme could double the number of students in institutions of higher education across the State. The number, which is currently around 5.8 lakh, could even go up to 11 lakh within two years, he said.
