CHENNAI : If things go as planned, the Pallikaranai Marshland will soon be declared as a protected area. A decision to protect the water body was taken at a meeting conducted by the Environment Minister, T.P.M. Mohideen Khan recently in which officials from Pollution Control Board, Environment Department and NGOs took part. Officials of the Pollution Control Board said various steps would be initiated to protect the marshland, which included cancellation of allotment of land to various organisations including educational institutions, joint patrolling by Corporation, Pollution Control Board, Environment Department and the local police besides demarcation of areas for dumping of garbage collected from the southern parts of the city. The Kancheepuram district administration has already issued orders cancelling allocation of lands in the marsh area, which was about 250 acres. The Chennai Corporation had to restrict the dumping of garbage to 200 acres of land. In order to control the dumping, it is proposed to demarcate the 200-acre area for dumping the waste. An integrated solid waste management programme will also be introduced under which segregation of waste at the source-level would be done. A compost yard would be constructed at Perungudi to recycle the collected bio-degradable materials, it has been decided. An important issue was the patrolling of the marsh area. It has been decided to arrange for joint patrolling by Corporation, Pollution Control Board and Police authorities. The patrolling would be taken up mainly to stop illegal or unauthorised dumping of waste and hazardous chemicals along the Pallikaranai - Perungudi Road. This would ensure better protection for the marshland. On its part the Forest department would seek to make it a reserved forest area to ensure better protection, the authorities said.
