CHENNAI : Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin on Thursday flagged off two new routes of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The new routes inaugurated are M12 (Velachery to Central Railway Station) and M13 (Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Koyambedu to Anna Square).

The M12 service would pass through Gurunanak College, Guindy Race Course Road, Little Mount, DMS, Church Park, Gopalapuram, Royapettah Hospital, Anna Road and P.ORR and Sons. The M13 service would be operated through Vadapalani Police Station, Liberty, Bharathi Nagar, Panagal Park, Pondy Bazaar, DMS, Church Park, Gopalapuram, Royapettah Hospital, Ameer Mahal and Triplicane.

Flagging off the route at a function held at Gopalapuram playground, Mr. Stalin (also Thousandlights MLA) said residents of Gopalapuram had petitioned him seeking services between Gopalapuram and the CMBT and to the Central Railway Station. When he asked Transport Minister K. N. Nehru about the feasibility of introducing new services, the latter immediately conceded the request and organised the flag-off programme.

Mr. Stalin said the inauguration of new services was an example of the speed at which the State Government was functioning. A few residents said route number 3A was withdrawn a few years ago, he said, adding that if the grievance also had been mentioned in the petition, it could have been addressed in the inauguration programme. However, Mr. Nehru would take steps to reintroduce the service,.

Mr. Nehru said that after the DMK came to power, the Chief Minister had increased funds allocation for improving public transport system in the State. Within 10 days, more new buses would be operated by the MTC. Already a few other Transport Corporations in the State were entrusted with the work of bodybuilding and the buses would be brought to the city and added to the MTC's fleet, he said.

Apart from new routes in the MTC, more new services would be operated between Chennai and other places in the State.
