Private buses to run more trips

KOCHI : Private bus operators in the city on Thursday agreed to conduct special services along the main routes of the city till 10.30 p.m. until the Onam rush was over, the Ernakulam Merchants' Union said. Shops in the city would remain open till 10.30 p.m., general secretary of the Union K. Venkitesh Pai said. The aim was to prevent traffic congestion during daytime. - Staff Reporter

Tanker lorries call off stir

KOCHI : The four-day strike by tanker lorries carrying drinking water to Elankunnapuzha, Njarakkal, Nayarambalam and Kadamakudy was called off following discussions with District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish. It was decided to resume services from 6 a.m. on Friday, after Mr. Hanish promised that all pending dues would be cleared soon. - Staff Reporter

Act anti-minority, says Church

KOCHI : The Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese of the Syro-Malabar Church termed the Kerala Professional Colleges Act, 2006, as anti-minority. The statement came in the wake of the Bishops and other church heads meeting at Mount St. Thomas on Thursday, official spokesperson of the church Paul Thelekkat said. - Staff Reporter

Mega show on Sunday

KOCHI : The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, would play host to Thara Tharangam 2006, the first mega show of television artistes. The event, organised by the Television Chamber of Kerala, would be held on Sunday. Cine actor, Mammootty would inaugurate the show. - Staff Reporter
