Coimbatore: The Vinayaka idol processions passed off peacefully amid tight security here on Thursday. The first phase of immersion of idols took place in the Kurichi tank on August 29. The crucial and final phase took place in the Singanallur Lake, Kulatheri and Muthannankulam on Thursday. Close to 103 idols installed by Hindu organisations including Hindu Munnani and Hindu Makkal Katchi were immersed in Muthannankulam. Three immersion processions had been taken out in the city since morning. The first procession began from the Raja Street Ther Nilai Thidal, while the second one was from VKK Menon Road at Sidhapudur in the afternoon and the third procession was from the Theppakulam Maidan in the evening. Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, Karan Singha and Deputy Commissioner (Law and Order) K. Shanmugavel supervised the security arrangements. A huge posse of police piloted and escorted the processions. Armed personnel were deployed in sensitive pockets en route and at the immersion point. The city especially West Coimbatore had witnessed traffic diversions since afternoon when the processions wound their way. The police said that with deployment of adequate personnel the traffic diversions were managed effectively.
