Corrections and clarifications

  • A reader says that the toll of the coal miners in Jharkhand in one article contradicts another on the same page (September 9, 2006). In the report "Bodies of 46 miners recovered from colliery", it was stated that "Fifty-four miners went down but four escaped with burn injuries ...." In "Mine accident: Left wants action", the sentence was: "Expressing grief at the death of 54 coal miners ... ", quoting a CPI (M) press note. As per the official list of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), there were 54 miners inside the mine at the time of the accident. Four, who were working on another assignment at an incline mount away from the coal face, could come out of the mine with burns. The other 50, deep inside the mine, were trapped and their bodies have been recovered.

  • In "Ex-police official's petition dismissed" (September 9, 2006), on the Supreme Court dismissing the petition filed by former IGP, Uttar Pradesh, Devendra Kishore Panda, a pointer in the infobox was: "Getting only Rs. 20,000 a month as pension: Panda". As a reader points out, the High Court's assumption of this figure was disputed by Panda's counsel.

  • Three reports in the September 8, 2006, issue of The Hindu left a reader confused about how the name of the composer of Vande Mataram was spelt. Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, or Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. The author wrote his name as Bankim Chandra (two words) Chattopadhyay. (Chatterjee is the anglicised version/pronunciation of the surname Chattopadhyay).

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph in "Safety cover for construction workers" (Property Plus, September 9, 2006) was: "Braving Peril: Painter takes risks for earning in daily lifleyhood." Is The Hindu modernising the English language? "Lifleyhood" is a new find, says a reader. It should have been "livelihood".

  • In "Hyderabad to host Asian Hopman Cup" ("Briefly — Sport", September 9, 2006), it was stated that the six best teams — China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Uzbekistan — have been invited to this tennis championship. A reader wanted to know which the sixth team was. The Sports Desk clarifies that these five teams will join India in a six-team competition.

  • The report "DVAC closing in on former Ministers", cited in the column "Online and Off Line," (September 11, 2006) was from Madurai and not from Chennai. The error is regretted.
