Bangalore: "We hope that the grievance boxes help the inmates draw the attention of the authorities to their (inmates) problems and get them solved," said Cyriac Joseph, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court and patron-in-chief of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA). He was speaking at a function organised to install grievance boxes at the Central Jail in Parappana Agrahara here on Tuesday. In the first phase, the KSLSA has installed 10 grievance boxes. Mr. Joseph said even inmates had rights that could not be denied by anyone. "We are constantly trying to help the authorities protect the rights of the inmates. As part of that endeavour, we have placed grievance boxes in all the barracks of the jail," he said. He said the authorities of KSLSA would open the boxes once a week and initiate action to address grievances. V. Gopala Gowda, executive chairman of KSLSA, said the inmates only had to write their grievances and put them in the boxes that had been placed in the jail. "The officials will then collect the grievances and try to solve the problems as soon as possible," he said. K.L. Manjunath, chairman, High Court Legal Services Committee; and B.S. Abbai, Superintendent of Central Jain; was present. S.T. Ramesh, Additional Deputy General of Police (Prisons), welcomed the gathering, while A.V. Chandrashekar, member secretary of KSLSA, proposed a vote of thanks.
In all jails
Earlier, speaking to presspersons, Mr. Ramesh said the KSLSA proposed the idea of installing grievance boxes in all jails in the State. The Inspector General of Police had issued a circular to all officers of the jails in the State to permit the District Legal Service Authorities (DLSA) and the Taluk Legal Services Committees (TLSC) to install the grievance boxes in the jails. The lock and key for these boxes would be operated by the respective authorities and committees, he added. The boxes would be opened by the legal services authorities concerned.
