Letters to the Editor
The report that a woman was tied to a lamppost and beaten up by a group of villagers near Chennai for the unexplained death of her 10-year-old daughter (Sept. 26) is shocking. What a gruesome sight it was! Who are the villagers to pronounce an off-hand verdict? The Government should deal firmly with those who took the law into their own hands. Such lawlessness should not be legitimised.
The blatant denial of the incident by the police speaks to their credibility. We now know how much to believe them when they deny incidents of custodial death. The human rights commissions should not only probe the villagers' conduct but also that of the so-called guardians of law in the issue.
