Corrections and clarifications

  • The sentence in the accompanying box item ("Patil sticks to his guns") in the report "Maharashtra: review panels for counter-terrorism" (September 27, 2006) was: "The BJP wanted the State Reconstitution Commission revived to look into the problem." As a reader points out, it should have been "States Reorganisation Commission". The Government of India appointed the States Reorganisation Commission in 1953 to examine the question of linguistic States in detail and make recommendations. The Commission submitted its report in 1955 and the States were reorganised in 1956. There have been demands for a second SRC.

  • The editorial "Small banks in a competitive era" (September 26, 2006) stated that Federal Bank is Kochi-based. A reader points out that it is based in Aluva (Kerala).

  • "Her publishers, Mainstream Publishing, hailed her book as the first-ever personal account of a `survivor of the horrific system' at the Magdalene Laundries where, it said, she spent nearly 14 years in the 1960s after her father tricked her into going there at the age of 8," was the sentence in "Story of a bestseller: fact or fiction?" (Op-Ed, September 26, 2006). A reader said it should have been the 1950s and 1960s or the 1960s and 1970s. Hasan Suroor clarifies that it was an oversight and that the sentence should have been "... she spent nearly 14 years after her father tricked her into going there at the age of 8 in the 1960s."

  • The sentence in "Rolling back the tanks" (Editorial, September 21, 2006) was: "The military leaders, who took over the provincial administration of the country through a `Council of Administrative Reforms' in the name of the King, struck when the embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was away in New York to attend the U.N. General Assembly session." A reader felt that it should have been "provisional administration". The sentence is correct. The Regional Commanders have taken over the administration of the provinces (States) to ensure that the country is fully under military rule.
