HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has directed officials to carefully implement the development/ welfare programmes initiated in the last two years and strictly monitor their progress. "Grounding the works with fanfare alone is not enough. We have to ensure that the programmes are sincerely implemented so that the promises made to the people are fulfilled," Dr. Reddy told a meeting with senior officials before going on a tour of Krishna district on Sunday. He said the Government would strengthen the monitoring cell in the Secretariat to periodically review the progress of works. It would not tolerate laxity of officials, Dr. Reddy stated, advising them to put in best efforts to complete the programmes, according to a press note from the Chief Minister's Office. He discussed with officials the status of petitions received during the Rajiv `Nagarabaata' and `Pallebaata' programmes. He was informed that of the 1,065 promises made during the tours of urban areas, 883 had been redressed and 165 were under various stage of implementation. During `nagarabaata', of the 750 promises pertaining to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, 362 were fulfilled by spending Rs. 1,113 crores. The Chief Minister asked officials to tour rural areas and review the free power, three per cent interest on loans to SHGs, Indira Prabha, Rajiv Yuvashakti, crop loans, pensions, health, education and women and child welfare programmes. Referring to the irrigation projects, Dr. Reddy said that water to 7.52 lakh acres would be released by the year-end once the pending works were completed. He said under the Indira Prabha programme, 3.5 lakh acres of wasteland would be rejuvenated by spending Rs. 500 crores. He said the Indiramma programme should be strictly implemented so that basic infrastructure facilities were available to rural areas. He reviewed the NREGP and Individual Sanitary Latrine scheme.
