CHENNAI
: S. Sundaramoorthy of Tiruvannamalai district came to the Government General Hospital here after being nearly blinded in an accident.
Today he has his vision back, after a complex operation by the GH surgeons, who removed a chip of rusted iron from the ironworker's right eye. Sundaramoorthy, a daily wage labourer from Alampoondi near Gingee, had an iron chip lodged in his while hammering a rod on September 28. After first aid at the Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Egmore, Sundaramoorthy was admitted to GGH. M. Ramaniraj, assistant professor, ENT department said an investigation showed that the iron chip was lodged in the optic nerve. Removing it through the eyes could have damaged the eye.
So endoscopy was taken up through the nose with a `C-arm', a specialised device used to fix plates after fractures, to remove the chip, he said. The team of doctors headed by ENT professor U. Venkatesan, Anthony Irudhayarajan and K.Semmana Selvan performed the surgery on October 14.
