DAMAGE CONTROL: An earthmover deployed to help relieve the flooding in Porur.
CHENNAI : The flooding in Porur had been brought under control, Arunachalam, president of Porur town panchayat, has said. Ambal Nagar, Mangala Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Subashree Nagar, with more than an estimated 3000 houses, were badly hit by the heavy rains last week. An earthmover and seven pumps were pressed into service to divert water into the storm water drains, Mr. Arunachalam said. Claiming that the drains were already in place when his tenure ended in the election before last, he said that they had fallen into disrepair since. The restoration of the storm water drains, and provision of drinking water supply and underground drainage system remained his top priorities, he said. There had been several complaints previously from residents in the local body alleging a lack of storm water drains.
Miscreants
During the heavy rains last year, residents near the Porur Eri (lake) complained that miscreants had breached the banks of the lake leading to the flooding of their colonies there. With the posting of police pickets, such incidents would not be repeated, the president said.
