CHENNAI: Information literacy (IL) empowers people by giving them access to crucial knowledge about their health, environment, education and work, said convenors of a workshop on IL. Thirty library and information science professionals and special educators will participate in the workshop, which will train them to help disabled children become information literate. The five-day south India-level workshop on `Information literacy competency development for librarians and special educators' is scheduled to begin on Monday at the Madras School of Social Work in the city. The UNESCO would be supporting the workshop, organised by the Madras School of Social Work (MSSW) in collaboration with the Society for Advancement of Library and Information Science (SALIS). The workshop aims to create awareness of the needs and uses of IL, information and communication technology, and the standards of IL among library and information science professionals. Along with special educators, they would learn to provide better information services to the disabled and to develop IL programs for them. Participants will also be given an overview of the Right to Information Act. Experts from academics, the Government and information technology will deliver lectures, hold practical sessions and discuss case studies. Field visits have also been scheduled. The convenors can be contacted for further details. V. Sakthi Regha, librarian, MSSW, can be reached at 9841148865, and S. Muralidhar, scientist, Combat Vehicles R&D Establishment, at 9444081729. The workshop coordinator is A. Hariharan, president, SALIS, and can be contacted at 9841601901. The SALIS holds programmes for the benefit of library and information science professionals, and aims to improve the reading habit and raise awareness of IL among the public.
