CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Director of Medical Education (DME) following a news report, which said that some staff members of the General Hospital here fleeced a bereaved family. Taking suo motu cognisance of a report in The Hindu , a Bench of the Commission, headed by Chairperson Justice A.S. Venkatachalamoorthy directed the investigation wing, attached to the body, to investigate the matter and submit a report within four weeks. It also issued a notice to the DME to enquire into the matter and send a report. The news report said that M.S. Shankar and his father, had gone to the General Hospital mortuary seeking to keep the body of his mother until the funeral. The hospital staff asked them to pay Rs.15,000 which was complied with. When they went to the mortuary the next day, they found that the body had decomposed. They were again asked to pay money and were given a receipt for Rs.20. The hospital authorities said that the family did not follow the procedures laid down by the hospital. However, that did not justify the demand for bribes. Action was being taken against those concerned.
