A comprehensive book on HIV/AIDS

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Y's Men's International, India, as part of an on-going global project on HIV/AIDS prevention, has brought out a comprehensive book on HIV for the information of public. The initiative for compiling information has come from the Kottarakara branch of Y's Men's International.

The book has up-to-date information on HIV/AIDS, which is intended to generate more awareness on the disease, its means of transmission and prevention aspects. As the focus is on dispelling fears about the disease and thus reduce social stigma of HIV, the book is a compilation of a series of questions on HIV - questions that one always wanted to ask but was reluctant to.

Apart from basic questions about HIV, it also tracks the origin of the disease, its aetiology and the history of the first reported cases. All routes of transmission of the virus have been explained in detail and the message that HIV is a totally preventable disease.

The importance of practising safe sex, abstaining from risky behaviour, testing methods for HIV and the current treatment of the disease have been dealt with in detail.

Common doubts, whether mosquitoes can spread HIV or if it is safe to share food/toilet with an HIV-infected person or if injuries sustained during sports activities with a positive person can pose a risk, have all been answered.

The book, which has both English and Malayalam sections, will be released on December 1, the World AIDS Day.
