Horrifying mess

This refers to the editorial "Horrifying mess" (Nov. 25). It is right in saying the U.S. and the U.K., "having made a horrifying and criminal mess of Iraq and the life of its people," should leave the Iraqis to their own devices.

Two of George W. Bush's important objectives — capital punishment for Saddam Hussein and inciting a civil war in Iraq — have been fulfilled. The third, plunder of Iraqi oil, is also under way. Soon, the U.S. and the U.K. may recall their armies from Iraq.

S. Mahaboob Basha,
Adoni, A.P

The U.S. finds itself in a catch-22 situation; it can neither leave Iraq nor control it. Only the Iraqis can end the state of anarchy. For this, they should be given control over their security forces.

Surendra S. Khangarot,

Saddam Hussein was toppled more than three years ago. But Iraq is still under foreign occupation. More and more Iraqis are getting killed in sectarian war. The serial blasts on Thursday that killed more than 140 Shias were the latest in the spate of violent attacks. The world waits helplessly as Washington takes its time to figure out how to clean up the mess it has created or, if it fails, how to run away from it all.

K. Vijayakumar,
Bangalore

Iraq presents a picture of total chaos with its social fabric ripped apart. The toll in almost everyday bombings is a grim pointer to what can happen when a country assumes the role of global policeman. With Britain under tremendous domestic pressure to withdraw its troops from Iraq, Mr. Bush and his coterie face a grim prospect. But the Americans cannot just cut and run as they did in Vietnam. They should leave Iraq as they found it — a nation, and not an assemblage of differing interests that are held together by an occupation force.

Hyderabad
