Resolution also condemns forceful occupation of Iraq
|
Kolkata:
The West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday adopted an all-party motion, urging the Centre to initiate diplomatic moves to mobilise world opinion against the death sentence awarded to the former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein.
The motion condemned the "mock trial" of Mr.Hussein by a tribunal and demanded the restoration of Iraq's independence and sovereignty. It feared that the crisis in that country, which had deepened as a consequence of the death sentence, could spread.
The United States had grossly dishonoured the charter of the United Nations by invading Iraq, it said.
Members condemned the forces of occupation in Iraq and blamed them for "robbing" the people their basic rights and installing a puppet regime there.
