Increase incentive, States told
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI
: The Centre has asked Chief Ministers to consider increasing the incentive money for inter-caste marriages to Rs. 50,000, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Replying to a question, the Minister said she had written to the Chief Ministers in February this year to consider increasing the amount to Rs. 50,000 of which 50 per cent would be by way of Central assistance.
At present, the incentive amount in 16 States varies between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 50,000.
Under the Centrally-sponsored schemes, assistance was being provided mainly to strengthen administrative and judicial machinery and for inter-caste marriages, where one of the spouses belongs to the Scheduled Castes, Ms. Kumar said.
While the State Governments were given 50 per cent Central assistance, the Union Territories were provided 100 per cent funding.
