NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Thursday after the Trinamool Congress, with support from the Bharatiya Janata Party, clashed with members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the alleged police excesses on farmers in connection with the land acquisition in West Bengal for a Tata car project.

Raising the matter during zero hour, Trinamool member Dinesh Trivedi wanted Home Minister Shivraj Patil to give an assurance that the police would not take action on the members of his party led by Mamata Banerjee.

The CPI(M) members vehemently protested this leading to the adjournment of the House first for 15 minutes and then for 10 minutes ahead of lunch.
