Strike call ahead of Manmohan visit

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Manipur on Saturday, activists and NGOs against the Tipaimukh Project have called for a 36-hour general strike.

Manipur MP Mani Charanamei has written to Dr. Singh requesting him not to lay the foundation stone of the dam.

Mr. Charanamei said the proposed dam would submerge 303.2 sq. km. and 80 per cent of it was in Tamenglong district.

The Action Against Tipaimukh Project (ACTIP) said since the Government was going ahead with its plan to construct the dam, the economic blockade along the two national highways would be intensified.

The Manipur Assembly too had opposed the dam's construction.

Though it might help control the floods in the Barak Valley, the area, being in an earthquake zone, was a cause for concern.
