Discuss Sachar report, says CPI

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India on Thursday demanded a full discussion on the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee report, which it termed a "reflection of the horrible condition" of Muslims.

That the single largest community among minorities had not been given its due over the past five decades spoke of the "failure of the political system." CPI Parliamentary Party leader Gurudas Dasgupta said here.

Addressing a press conference along with party MPs, S. Sudhakar Reddy and Ajoy Chakraborty, he said the CPI was against reservation on religious lines. "We want Muslims to get access to jobs, education and be given opportunity for social and cultural development. There cannot be any delay. Government should not be afraid."

Comprehensive scheme

The Congress said a comprehensive scheme would be drawn up instead of providing any quick-fix solution. Party spokesperson Abhishek Singvhi said it was the Congress, which set up the Sachar Committee and it would do everything possible to take this effort forward.

Mr. Singhvi disagreed with the view that the Congress should take the blame for the current status of Muslims as it was in power for the most part of the post-Independence period.

Not religion-specific

He said whatever was done till now was not for minorities looked at in isolation but for deprived classes including the Scheduled Castes/Tribes and minorities.

"It was not religion or group-specific but was part of a larger problem affecting large sections."
