Dalit's death: NHRC notice to Nasik police chief

NEW DELHI:
Taking suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report on the death of a Dalit youth at the hands of a mob in Nasik , the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Police Commissioner of Nasik and called for a report within a fortnight.
According to the news report, Rangnath Shankar Dhale, a 23-year-old resident of Muktidham hutments in Nasik, was beaten to death by a mob for allegedly pelting stones on passing vehicles during the protests against the attack on B. R. Ambedkar statue in Kanpur.
The Commission said that if the news report was true, there was a serious issue of violation of human rights.
In another case reported by the media, the NHRC has asked for the comments of the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of West Bengal on the reported death of a newborn as the police grilled her mentally challenged mother in a police station.
