Export of coir products on the rise during April-December

Export of rubberised coir increased to 556 tonnes

KOCHI: The export of coir and coir products has registered an increase of more than nine per cent during April to December 2006. The export amounted to 1,09,688 tonnes valued at Rs.421.17 crore, according to provisional figures released by the Coir Board.

The export registered an increase of 9.46 per cent in terms of quantity amounting to 9,476 metric tonnes and 10.75 per cent in terms of value amounting to Rs.40.89 crore over the actual export of 100,212 tonnes valued at Rs.380.27 crore during the corresponding period in 2005.

The export of the semi-finished item of coir yarn recorded an increase of one per cent in quantity and four per cent in terms of value. The export of coir mat increased from 48,409 tonnes to 51,499 tonnes in quantity and from Rs.295.43 crore to Rs.325.82 crore in terms of value. The increase represents six per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

In the case of coir matting, exports increased from 2,262 tonnes to 2,625 tonnes in terms of quantity and from Rs.14.72 crore to Rs.17.54 crore in terms of value. The rise is 16 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.

The export of rubberised coir increased from 364 tonnes to 556 tonnes in quantity and from Rs.2.53 crore to Rs.4.13 crore in terms of value. The increase corresponds to 53 per cent and 63 per cent respectively.

The export of coir fibre registered an increase of 217 per cent. It increased from 1,029 tonnes to 3,262 tonnes in quantity. The export went up by 198 per cent from Rs.1.28 crore to Rs.3.83 crore in terms of value.

The export of coir pith increased by seven per cent from 37,789 tonnes to 40,566 tonnes in quantity and by 20 per cent from Rs.27.30 crore to Rs.32.79 crore in terms of value.

Drop in coir rope exports

The export of coir yarn increased from 6,939 tonnes to 7,035 tonnes in terms of quantity and from Rs.21.84 crore to Rs.22.66 crore in terms of value. The rise corresponds to one per cent and four per cent.

In the case of geotextiles, the export increased from 2,056 tonnes to 2,450 tonnes in quantity (19 per cent) and from Rs.9.43 crore to Rs.10.27crore (9 per cent) in value.

But export of rugs and carpets decreased from 1,144 tonnes to 273 tonnes in quantity (76 per cent) and from Rs.6.60 crore to Rs.1.89 crore (71 per cent) in value when compared to the corresponding period the previous year.

The export of coir rope decreased from 116 tonnes to 89 tonnes in quantity (23 per cent) and Rs.50.57 lakh to Rs.35.53 lakh (30 per cent) in terms of value. Curled coir valued at Rs.1.46 crore was exported during this period as against nil export recorded during the same period the previous year.

But the export of other sorts of coir registered a decrease. It decreased from 104 tonnes to 42 tonnes in quantity (60 per cent) and from Rs.60.82 lakh to Rs.37.54 lakh (38 per cent) in terms of value.
