Sattur: Defending champion, Chennai, seeded into the quarterfinals, took its appointed place in the semifinals with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Sivagangai in the 48th State senior inter-district football championship organised by Virudhunagar District Football Association at S.H.N. Edward HSS ground, Sattur on Thursday. Referee Jeyakumar had to use three red and two yellow cards in a mediocre match. Striker Jothikumar opened the account in the third minute, off a cross from Vimalraj from the left. He scored again in the 17th minute off a pass from midfielder Amala Francis Noa. Midfielder Rajmohan scored the third in the 33rd minute, off a cross from Vimalraj. Thereafter play turned rough and led to a clash between the players in the 38th minute. Dinakaran and Lakshmanan of Chennai and Mohamed Asar Asane of Sivagangai were shown the red card and Somasundaram of Sivagangai received a yellow card. Amala Francis Noa completed the tally for Chennai with a fine solo effort in the 71st minute.
Semifinalists spotted
At Madurai, host Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College, Saraswatiry Nanayanan College, Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti and Madura College entered the semifinals of the TVR Memorial Trophy inter-collegiate football tournament at SLC ground, TVR Nagar on Thursday. The results (quarterfinals): SL College 7 (Madhan 3, Shinu 3, Senthil Kumar) bt Somhatra 3 (A. Saravana Kumar hat-trick); SN 3 (Murugan, Hariharan, Kumar) bt American 0; SIT 8 (Prabaharan 4, Ravi, Sankar, Vasanth, Saravanan) bt VHNS, Virudhunagar 0; Madura 4 (Suresh 2, Vinodh, Nagoorikani) bt SVN, Nagamalai 0. Sachin Brothers wins
At Karaikudi, Ramnath Selvan's brilliant 89 and Thirumavukkarasu's four for 40, including a hat-trick, helped Sachin Brothers Cricket Club carve out a handsome 125-run victory over Moonlight winners CC in the Sivagangai District Cricket Association 'A' division league at Karaikudi recently. The scores: A division: Sachin Brothers CC 268 in 38.4 overs (Ramnath Selvam 89, Joseph 58) bt Moonlight Winners CC 143 in 21.2 overs (Thituvavukkarasu four for 40, including a hat-trick). Vanchi CC 159 in 35 overs (Senthil 54, Suresh 44, Sheik Abdullah five for 30) lost to Aruna Sports CC 162 for nine in 29.1 overs (Palaniappan 49 not out, Mani four for 48). Karaikudi Town CC 148 in 38.5 overs (Nepolion five for 23) lost to Devakottai CC 149 for three in 25.5 overs (Thirunavukarasu 61 not out). Oscar CC 177 for nine in 44 overs (Suresh Kannan 76 not out, Pandiyan five for 23) lost to TCPL Knights CC 178 for five in 28 overs. B division: Leaders 122 in 28.5 overs lost to Gangai Brothers 123 for seven in 18.5 overs. C division: B.
