KOCHI: A little village near the hilly Kerala-Karnataka border in Kannur was the big reason behind defending champion Kerala women's comfortable triumph at the South Zone senior handball championship here on Thursday. Half of the home team, which drubbed Andhra Pradesh 25-7 in the league decider at the Regional Sports Centre this evening, came from Vayakara and are products of the Government Higher Secondary School there which is producing hundreds of top-quality handballers. The decider was a no-contest with the Kerala girls easily finding their way through the Andhra defence. Captain M. Deepa brought in a nice variety in her shooting while the consistent E.A. Anupama and Kerala's Doha Asian Games stars P.P. Shajina and C. Seena joined the fun. Andhra Pradesh, with one win in the three-team league event, finished runner-up. The results: Women's league: Kerala 25 (M. Deepa 9, E.A. Anupama 6, C. Seena 4, P.P. Shajina 4) bt Andhra Pradesh 7 (Janaki 4). Men's league: Andhra Pradesh 20 (Mallika Arjun Reddy 6) bt Puducherry 4; TN 17 (Udayakumar 5, Satheesh 4) bt Goa 13 (Nazareth 6); Kerala 26 (Saneesh 7, Manikandan 5) bt Puducherry 12.
