KANPUR: Andhra's agony multiplied on the second day of the contest, as Uttar Pradesh, after taking a first innings lead of 235, reduced it to 65 for six in the second essay in their Ranji Trophy Elite group match at the Kamla Club here on Thursday. Nothing went Andhra's way. Uttar Pradesh lost overnight batsman Suresh Raina quickly but Mohammad Amir Khan, batting at No. 9, made a brilliant 70 off 97 balls with 12 fours and a six to put his team firmly on course. Ravikant Shukla contributed 54 with seven fours, but it was Amir's commitment late in the order that gave Uttar Pradesh the strength to press for an outright victory with a bonus point.
Praveen packs a punch
Of course, there was a cameo by Praveen Kumar that left Andhra shattered. This bright all-rounder from Meerut, who looks good enough to play in a higher grade, hit 41 off 27 balls with three fours and three sixes but twisted his ankle playing volleyball during the lunch break to be ruled out of the match. Praveen's absence was not really felt as R. P. Singh and Rohit Prakash bowled well in tandem to expose the brittle Andhra batting. The two stunning catches that Suresh Raina took at short cover also contributed immensely towards Uttar Pradesh finishing the day in a favourable position that should save it from relegation.
